Double-Track Truss Bridge in the Jersey Subdivision
In the Jersey Subdivision exists Guernsey Pass. When the subdivision was planned, the track crew decided to build a double track-truss bridge. This seemed like the best balance of cost and function. They chose the Walthers model 933-3012. During construction newer taller double stack intermodal freight units appeared and would not fit through the bridge.
The bridge, as it comes from Walthers, is 2 7/8" from the top of the rail to the underside of the bracing on the top of the bridge. Some of the newer double stacks were 3". The track crew decided to modify the bridge to accommodate the newer intermodal cars.
Here is how the bridge looked at construction time.
To modify the bridge the crew started by removing the cross bracing and lattice bracing at one end of the bridge and working towards the other end. They then replaced the lattice bracing with 1/4" square styrene and then replaced the cross bracing on top of the tie plates.
Once one end was completed they moved to the other end and then tested the new intermodal units. The modifications provide a clearance now of 3 1/4".
